Parish Life

Faith formation for every age, a food pantry for our neighbors, and many ways to serve at the altar of God.

Faith formation

Formation in the faith is lifelong

It is important that children and adults alike keep growing in their relationship with God, Jesus and the Church. Our beliefs often run counter to the society we live in, and we offer guidance and support to families in their important, and sometimes difficult, responsibility of passing on and living the faith.

Ages 3–5 · Sundays

Sunday Preschool

Introduces the Old and New Testament through the year with Bible stories, crafts, religious pictures, prayers and snacks.

Grades 1–8 · Sundays 1:00 p.m.

Religious Formation

Catechism class meets after the noon Mass in the lower church hall on most Sundays. Families must be practicing Catholics (weekly Mass) and registered at SS. Peter and Paul. Families from other parishes are always welcome.

Adults

Becoming Catholic (OCIA)

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, formerly RCIA, for adults seeking Baptism or full communion with the Church, and for Catholics who were baptized but never completed their initiation.

For all programs, call the Parish Office at 313-846-2222.

Christian service

St. Vincent de Paul Conference

We keep in the depth of our hearts the conviction that the best way to serve God is by serving our neighbors, respecting at all times the dignity and value of every person as a child of God.

Food Pantry

Bags of food for families and individuals in need in the surrounding area, primarily the 48228 zip code. Primary distribution is the fourth Friday of every month, 2:00–3:00 p.m., at the Activities Building, 7718 Westwood. We pride ourselves on not turning people away.

Holiday Food Program

Turkeys or hams with baskets of food for families at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and baskets for children at Easter.

Resource guidance & Right to Life

We help people connect with the resources they need, and support pro-life organizations such as Right to Life–LIFESPAN and Guadalupe Partners.

Help us do more. Join the Conference, drop food in the baskets in church, or leave clothing and shoes in the St. Vincent de Paul drop box in the parking lot near the Activities Building. Call ext. 107.

Serve at the altar of God

Men & boys

Altar Servers

We are seeking altar servers for all Masses. Boys become eligible to train after First Holy Communion, and the men of the parish are encouraged to train as well. Preserving the tradition of men and boys serving at the altar, the parish hopes to foster many vocations to the priesthood. Speak with Fr. Jerry.

Proclaiming the Word at the ambo

High school age & confirmed

Lectors

Lectors proclaim the Word of God and the prayers of the faithful. Lectors are practicing members of the parish who speak in a clear voice, attend a training session, prepare their readings ahead of time, and dress appropriately for the sanctuary.

Ushers

Greet people as they enter, take up the collection and help anyone in need during Mass. Open to men and women who have been confirmed.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Assist with the distribution of Holy Communion at Mass. Ask Fr. Jerry about serving.

Cantors

Lead the congregation in song at most liturgies throughout the year. Becoming a cantor is by audition.

Music ministry

An organ for a church of 1,700

In 1980 the parish contracted the Reuter Organ Company of Lawrence, Kansas to build a pipe organ for the vast nave. Financial limits meant a modest two-manual organ of 26 ranks, prepared for 33, which served for 23 years.

In 2003 the instrument was renovated and completed by the Allen Organ Company: a three-manual Allen console now controls 50 digital ranks blended with the 26 pipe ranks as one instrument. More recent additions include a Plein Jeu III (183 pipes) in the Swell and a Tuba Mirabilis (61 pipes) in the Solo division.

It supports congregational singing, accompanies choirs, soloists and ensembles, and plays the organ literature of every period, as you can hear below.
